রাজধানী ঢাকায় প্রতিদিন প্রায় ৪,৫০০–৫,০০০ টন বর্জ্য উৎপন্ন হচ্ছে, যা নগর ব্যবস্থাপনার ওপর বাড়তি চাপ সৃষ্টি করছে। একই সঙ্গে বায়ুদূষণ পরিস্থিতিও ভয়াবহ। কখনও কখনও এটি WHO নির্ধারিত মানের তুলনায় ১৮ গুণ বেশি হয়ে উঠছে। বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, ইটভাটা, যানবাহন ও ধুলাবালি মিলিয়ে প্রায় ৮৫% দূষণের জন্য দায়ী।
